Sold

A large, late 18th century London verge watch, in silver pair cases, with a regulator style “doctor’s” dial with calendar and stop lever.

MOVEMENT : A fine quality gilt fusee movement, with verge escapement, engraved and pierced balance cock, diamond endstone and four round pillars. Clean blued screws and silver regulator disk. Protected by a removable gilt dustcap.

Signed John Williams, Shoreditch and numbered 168

A steel lever under the dial at 3 allows the movement to be stopped and restarted.

Running well, and in excellent condition.

DIAL : A very impressive regulator style white enamel dial, with overlapping time, seconds and calendar dials. Signed with original owner’s name WILLIAM COCKER, LONDON.

In good condition though with a large flake/chip on the edge at 6 and a faint hairline from 6 towards 2.

Nice gilt hands, which appear to be original.

INNER CASE : Silver, with hallmarks for London, 1797, maker’s mark IR.

The silver is in very good condition and the high dome bull’s eye crystal is good.
The hinge is good and the bezel snaps shut but is tight and requires some pressure on both sides to snap closed correctly.

OUTER CASE : Silver pair case, with matching hallmarks and maker’s mark to the inner.

A nice heavy case in very good condition.

John Williams of Shoreditch is listed between 1799 and 1804. The signature on the dial is for the original owner and the dial is original to the movement.
