France, c1830
Morocco leather carrying case, 135mm. x 93mm. x 25 mm.

Price £425

A red Morocco leather travelling case, for 2 pocket watches, presented by Leopold II, the Grand Duke of Tuscany, in 1830.

The top and sides are covered in red Morocco leather, embossed with gold. The top is embossed with :
DON
DE SON A.J.R. LEOPOLD II
GRAND DUC DE TOSCANE
15 JUILLET 1830

The lid is held by 2 gilt catches to the front edge and a hinge to the back edge.

The interior is lined with cream silk, with gold edging to the lid.

The base is lined with blue velvet, fitted for 2 pocket watches and an indentation above for a key. The watch fittings are of slightly different sizes, about 48mm. and 45mm. So probably designed to hold a man’s and lady’s watch.

In very good condition throughout, with no repairs.

The leather has a few small stains and scratches and a small section missing at the back around the edge of the hinge. The gilding is complete and still bright.

The hinge and catches are fine. The silk lining has just one small mark. The velvet is good and the left hand fitting is a little compressed at the top (where the bow of the watch would have rested).
