Verge escapement
Price £725
A fine quality early 19thc. verge watch, with a nicely painted polychrome dial showing music related subjects.
MOVEMENT : This is an attractive and ornate gilt verge movement, with beautifully engraved balance cock and plates.
The balance cock had a diamond endstone and musical instruments with sheet music engraved on the neck (complimenting the musical symbols on the dial).
Four round pillars, Bosley type regulator and blued steel screws. The plate is engraved with a snail and hare to indicate slower or faster for the regulator.
Excellent condition and running well.
Signed Jas. Byard, London and numbered 12805.
The movement is protected by a removable gilt dustcap, engraved with the date of manufacture (1809) and the initial owner’s name – Bar. Paget (perhaps a musician ?)
DIAL : A polychrome enamel dial, showing musical instruments and sheet music.
Gilt hands.
In good condition except for a few light scratches, a flake at the winding hole, and some small areas of damage right on the edge at 12, 3 and 5. No repairs.
CASE : Silver gilt, with hallmarks for London 1809 and markers mark SA. Engine turned decoration to the bezel and back.
In good condition. There is some wear to the gilding of the outside surfaces, with the silver (brass stem and bow) showing through. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut and springs open when the button on the pendant is pressed. The crystal is good.
