Sold

A late 18th century English verge watch, in silver pair cases, with regulator (or doctors) type dial.

MOVEMENT : Nice quality gilt fusee movement, with verge escapement, engraved and pierced balance cock, with diamond endstone. Four round baluster pillars, blued screws and a silver regulator disk.

Running well, and in good condition. There is a stop/start lever on the edge of the dial at 7. This lever turns an arbor which should have a steel arm attached which would catch or release the contrate wheel. This steel arm is absent.

Signed “S. & C. Joyce, London” and numbered (275).

DIAL : A fine white signed enamel dial, with centre seconds and subsidiary hour/minutes at the top.

In reasonable condition with no repairs, but two light hairlines towards the edge between 9 and 11, and a scratch on the subsidiary dial between 4 and 5.

Fine gilt hands, with blued steel seconds.

INNER CASE : Silver, with hallmarks for London, 1784, maker’s mark TC.

In very good condition. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly. The high dome crystal is good.

OUTER CASE : Silver pair case. Matching hallmarks and maker’s mark to the inner.

Again, all in good condition. The hinge, catch button and catch are complete and the case snaps shut correctly.

S. & C. Joyce are listed at Lombard Street, London, from 1790 until 1825.
