Gilt & shagreen pair cases, 48.5 mm.
Verge escapement

Sold

MOVEMENT : Fully signed (Jas. Smith, London) and numbered (11277). Gilded verge movement with engraved/pierced balance cock and blued regulator disc. Unusual baluster pillars. Both 3rd and contrate wheels have 6 spokes (a sign of quality). Good original condition and running well.

DIAL : White enamel, signed with the original owner’s name and place (JOHN SMITHER BRAMLEY, SURRY). Fine condition with just a few surface scratches and small chip at the centre hole. No repairs. Nice original 18thc steel beetle and poker hands.

INNER CASE : Gilt brass. Maker’s mark WB. Good condition with no dents but the gilding has worn off and the pendant has been reattached. The high dome crystal is fine. The hinge is also good and the case snaps shut nicely.

OUTER CASE : Gilt brass with shagreen, or textured dyed leather covering. No marks. Very good condition throughout with a little wear to the gilding and just one pin missing. The green covering is complete with no damage except for a couple of light rubs.

It was not uncommon to commission a watch with the owner’s name during the 18th century. This dial appears to be original to the watch and John Smither of Bramley is not a listed maker.
