Cylinder by John Ellicott, London

A fine mid 18th century cylinder by an eminent London maker.

MOVEMENT : A fine quality gilt cylinder movement, with nicely engraved and pierced balance cock, four beautiful ornate pillars, diamond endstone, and silver regulator disk. Signed (Ellicott, LONDON) and numbered (6069).

The movement is protected by a removable gilt dustcap, signed and numbered as the movement.
The movement is in good condition throughout, with just some scratches around the pillar top. It is running well.

DIAL : Classic mid 18thc white enamel dial in good condition, with just two light hairlines from the centre towards 2 and towards 10. Good 18thc steel beetle and poker hands.

INNER CASE : Gilded brass, with rubbed maker’s mart and serial number as the movement.
In good condition with just some wear to the gilding on the bezel, stem and bow. The hinge is fine. The high dome, bull’s eye crystal is perfect.

OUTER CASE : Gilded brass, with drilled holes around the rims, showing that it would originally have been covered with shagreen, shell or leather.
The brass is in good condition. The catch, catch button and hinge are fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly.

John Ellicott watches are numbered 4770 from 1760 and 6453 from 1770. From 1758 all John Ellicott watches were simply signed Ellicott. The serial number of this movement (6069) dates it to about 1767.
