Thomas Brass
Guildford, Surrey, 1788
Silver pair cases
Verge calendar movement

Sold

A very large calendar verge, in silver pair cases.

MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with very large engraved and pierced balance cock and pierced plate. The balance cock table is engraved with a portrait medallion and military symbols. Signed (Thos. Brass , Guildford) and numbered (381). Four round pillars. Very good original condition, and running.

DIAL : White enamel calendar dial in good condition. No chips or repairs but a short hairline from the edge near 12, and some surface scratches between 11 and 12.

Gold coloured hour and minute hands and brass calendar hand. The calendar and minute hands both have old repairs where attached to the arbor.

Note that the calendar work under the dial is complete, and the calendar function works correctly.

INNER CASE : Silver, with London hallmarks for 1788, maker IT. In reasonable condition, with a rather clumsy repair to the inside where the stem has been reattached. The bow is distorted and worn. The hinge has one sleeve missing but the bezel does snap shut. The high dome bull’s eye crystal is fine.

The back is engraved with a monogram, possible ‘FJ’.

OUTER CASE : Silver pair case with matching marks to the inner. The hinge and catch are fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly, though the catch button has worn down. A little wear to the bezel but the silver is in generally good condition.

The case contains a series of old watchpapers (x7), with various owners shown, dated between 1866 and 1887.

Thomas Brass is listed in Guildford (Surry) between 1767 and 1784.
