Verge movement
Sold
Beautiful gilt and enamel verge, with stunning red and white enamel and portrait panel.
MOVEMENT : Signed (E. Martindale) and dated (1784). Good quality verge movement (probably London) in fine original condition and running well. Nice bright gilding and blued screws.
DIAL : White enamel. A classic late 18th century English dial, in good condition with some very light hairlines around the centre, but no repairs. Very fine, original 18th century, gold beetle and poker hands.
INNER CASE : Gilt brass. Maker’s mark EL. Very good condition with no repairs or damage and very little wear to the gilding (a little around the band and to the stem). The high dome bull’s eye crystal is in good condition. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut nicely.
OUTER CASE : Gilt brass and enamel. The hinge and catch are fine and the case snaps shut nicely. The enamel on the bezel has been repaired around the rim, and this restoration has been over varnished, giving it a slightly yellow appearance. On the back, the red and white enamel is perfect, The central enamel portrait shows some wear and light scratches but has not been restored.
This is a wonderful early enamel case. The outer case includes a beautifully hand painted watch paper.
