Cylinder movement

MOVEMENT : Fully signed (Thos. Grignion, London) and numbered (1601). Very good quality cylinder movement with large diamond endstone and 6 spoked wheels. In fine original condition and running well.

DIAL : 36.5 mm. White enamel. Virtually perfect condition with just a small rub on the edge at 10 and a tiny flake at the centre. Overall really exceptional. Later hands.

INNER CASE : 42.25 mm. Fully hallmarked for London, 1787, maker IW. Very good condition with no repairs, wear or damage. High dome bull’s eye crystal in fine condition. The hinge is fine and the case snaps shut nicely.

OUTER CASE : 50.5 mm. Matching hallmarks to the inner. Again in very good condition. The back is nicely engraved with a monogram and the brass catch button (later) inset with a white gemstone. The hinge and catch are fine.

Thomas Grignion (I) improved the cylinder escapement while working in London until his death in 1784 when he was succeeded by his son, Thomas Grignion (II).
