William Bartram
London, c1680
Silver repousse pair cases
Verge movement
Sold
MOVEMENT : This wonderful old verge movement is signed ‘W. Bartrem, London’. Beautifully engraved and pierced balance cock and unusual pillars. It is in excellent and complete original condition and is running well.
DIAL : The later white enamel dial is about 39.5 mm in diameter. Good condition but with some surface scratches and two light hairlines. There is some rubbing and a repair at 6 o’clock. Nice gilt brass fancy hands.
INNER CASE : Silver. Diameter 47 mm. No hallmarks, maker’s mark IMC and numbered 359. The hinge is fine and the movement catch is missing. The bezel closes but doesn’t snap shut. The silver is in good condition but there is a repair where the pendant has been reattached (probably a replacement), and the case around the pendant strengthened (this makes for quite a tight fit to the outer case).
OUTER CASE : Silver. Diameter 54.5 mm. This is a nice repousse case in good condition. No hallmarks but signed “W.C.”. The inside still retains it’s gilding. Some wear to the high points but no holes. There is an old repair to the back, around the pendant, where the case has been strengthened. The hinge, catch and button are fine and the case snaps shut nicely.
Loomes lists William Bartram in London between 1677 and 1716.
