Joseph Windmills
London, c1690
Gilt & ivory case
Verge movement

Sold

This is a very early verge pocket watch, in a gilt brass and ivory case. It was made by Joseph Windmills, in London, at the end of the 17th century.

MOVEMENT : The gilded verge fusee movement, with the very large engraved and pierced balance cock, and beautiful tulip pillars It is signed “Joseph Windmills, London”. It is in good, complete condition and is running well. There are a few scratches around the pillar pins but the beautiful pierced balance cock and plate are fine.

DIAL : The white enamel dial is about 36mm in diameter. Probably a mid 18th century replacement, it has been restored around the opening catch at 6 o’clock and the winding aperture. Excellent early 18th century hands (not reproductions).

CASE : Diameter 50.75mm. This is a very rare ivory and gilt brass case. The gilding on the inside is complete and worn through to the brass on the outer rims and pendant/bow. The pendant is original and has not been reattached to the case. Good high dome, bull’s eye crystal with no damage. The hinges and catch are all ok.
The ivory has survived very well with 2 short cracks on the back and some staining around the catch stud and one short crack on the bezel and the only small section missing at the catch. A rare early case without restoration.

Loomes lists Joseph Windmills in London from 1671. Windmills signed his watches as “Joseph Windmills” only up until about 1695.
