Early London Verge with Mock Pendulum Balance

This is an early verge, in a silver consular case, with a fine silver champleve dial and mock pendulum balance.

MOVEMENT : Gilded fusee verge movement, with engraved and pierced winged balance cock. This has a cut out to reveal the mock pendulum bob on the balance wheel. Four crested tulip pillars. The balance cock is engraved with a vase and scrolls to the table.

All in good condition and running well.

DIAL : A fine silver champleve dial.

There is a little wear at the opening catch but in good overall condition.

Good 18thc. blued steel beetle and poker hands.

CASE : Silver with no maker’s mark. There is a sliding cover to the winding aperture on the back which is nicely engraved with a Tudor rose.

The silver is in reasonable condition, with some small dents, wear and repairs. The hinge and catch are fine and the bezel snaps shut. There is a repair to the bow (slightly bent), which with the stem is a later replacement.

The high dome bull’s eye crystal is good.

Lewis Holland was free of The Clockmakers’ Company in 1699, and this watch is of that date or very shortly afterwards.
