Norwich Pocket Watch

An early 19thc. Norwich pair cased silver verge watch, with a particularly nice silver dial.

MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with engraved plate and balance cock, and unusual 6 spoke polished steel balance wheel. Four round pillars, large silver regulator disk and diamond endstone to the balance.

The movement is protected by a removable white metal dustcap. Running well.

Signed Jas. Woods, NORWICH and numbered 8429.

DIAL : A fine silver dial, with applied gilt numerals and engine turned decoration to the chapter and centre. There are a few light marks but generally in good condition.

Blued steel hands.

INNER CASE : Silver, hallmarked for London 1810, maker’s mark TB, and movement serial number 8429.

In good condition, with just one very small dent to the back. The hinge is fine and the bezel closes.

The high dome crystal is quite scratched but has no chips or cracks.

OUTER CASE : Silver, with matching hallmarks and maker’s mark to the inner.

The silver is in good condition, with just a couple of small dents on the bezel at 2 and some small dents to the rims. The hinge and catch are fine and the case snaps shut though gapes a little around the stem. The catch button is dented.

The outer case contains a nice old Norwich watchmaker’s paper from Mann & Son.

James Woods was born in 1768 and worked in Norwich from 1800. He died in 1815.

The case maker’s mark is probably for Thomas Burwash of St. John Street, London.
