Charming underpainted horn pocket watch

A verge watch, in a charming and beautifully underpainted horn pair case.

MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with finely engraved and pierced balance cock, with a mask to the neck. Four square baluster pillars and silver regulator disk.

Running well and in good condition.

Signed “Wm. Howard, London” and numbered 6647.

DIAL : A fine white enamel dial, in excellent condition., with just a few light scratches but no hairlines or chips.

Later brass hands.

INNER CASE : Silver gilt, with London hallmarks for 1770, marker’s mark WB and movement serial number 6647.

In good condition though with some wear to the gilding around the band, bezel and to the brass bow and stem. The stem has been reattached, with dark solder visible to the inside and outside.

The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly. The high dome bull’s eye crystal is fine.

OUTER CASE : A wonderful gilt brass pair case with underpainted horn covering. The back is painted with a finely dressed couple possibly outside a church window, with a lake and boat in the distance. So possibly a wedding scene. The edge of the back is decorated with a gold band inside a seaweed pattern border. All beautifully painted.

The hinge and catch are complete and the case snaps shut. The catch button has some wear but functions correctly.

The horn is in very good condition, with the green, red and gold colours still bright.
The horn on the bezel is complete, with 2 cracks but no pins missing.
The back is almost perfect, with no visible damage, and again with no pins missing.
