Silver Repousse Pocket Watch

A mid 18th century London verge watch, in silver pair cases, with a repousse outer.

MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with engraved and pierced balance bridge, the table and top plate with lace edging. Four square pillars and silver regulator disk. Blued screws.

Excellent condition, with the gilding still bright, and running well. The calendar is also working correctly.

Signed J. Wood, London and numbered 1053.

DIAL : A fine silver, champleve dial, with central signed disc, calendar aperture, and gilt floret half hour markers. All in excellent condition.

Replacement gilt hands.

INNER CASE : Silver, with hallmarks for London, 1766, maker’s mark W.B.

In good condition with just a few light bruises to the silver and some compression to the band. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly.

The high dome crystal is good.

OUTER CASE : Silver repousse pair case.

In good condition with just a little wear to the repousse high points. The hinge and catch are complete and the case snaps shut, though the catch button is absent.

The lace edge to the balance cock table and plate is a feature seen in watches, mainly from London, between the short period of about 1760 to 1770.

Although marked LONDON, this watch may be of Continental origin, possibly made in Switzerland or perhaps France.
