This is a fine quality, late 19th century French grand sonnerie carriage clock, the gilt brass foliate engraved gorge case enclosing an enamel dial with subsidiary alarm dial. The eight day spring driven movement has the original silvered compensated lever platform escapement It chimes and repeats the quarters on two bells, with the chime selection lever to the underside.
There is a repeat button on the top.
Signed for Vrard to the bottom centre of the back plate :
亨得利
The clock is in fine condition, with just a couple of nibbles to the bevelled glass on the back.
It is running and striking correctly. Complete with key. The alarm functions correctly.
L. Vrard & Co. were amongst the most prominent Swiss watchmakers in the late 19th century specialising in watches and clocks for the Chinese Market and operating out of two locations in China, Tientsin and later Shanghai. Vrard later operated under the Chinese name Hengdeli.
By 1906 the company was owned by Hope Brothers’ & Co. and it is their name which appears above the door in the attached early 20thc. photo of the old Vrard premises on Nanking Road, Shanghai.
This clock can be reasonably attributed to Henri Jacot, Paris. It is not signed by the maker as it was made to be exported to Vrard and is stamped with their mark instead. But almost identical signed clocks exist by Jacot for the European market.
