Thomas Tompion & Edward Banger
London, c1707
Gilt pair cases, 60 mm.
Verge escapement
Price £9,500
A fine verge watch, by Thomas Tompion and partner Edward Banger, in later substantial gilt pair cases.
MOVEMENT : Gilt verge escapement movement.
Signed T. TOMPION, E. BANGER, LONDON and numbered 4066.
Four Egyptian pillars and a very well engraved winged balance cock, with a small mask to the neck and scrolls and foliage on the table. Blued screws and large silver regulator disk.
All in very good condition throughout and running well.
The backcock iron has a visible steel extension within the brass fretwork block which is decorated with a leafy flourish at the tip – one of the leaves is missing
The dial plate has three additional holes left over from thefitment of the original dial.
The movement shows some features typical of Tompion’s work. The hairspring pin is of rectangular profile (rather than round) and the movement number (4066) is stamped on the dial plate and on the underside of the balance cock.
DIAL : A fine white enamel dial. This is a later replacement (probably late 18thc.).
In very good condition, with a couple of light scratches.
File gilt beetle and poker hands.
INNER CASE : Gilt brass case, with maker’s mark RN (rubbed).
In good condition. The gilding is intact on the inner surfaces but evenly worn through to the brass on the outside. The hinge is a little worn, but the bezel snaps shut correctly. The high dome crystal is good with just a few light scratches.
OUTER CASE : A substantial gilt pair case.
The cases are later than the movement, probably late 18thc. as the dial.
Good condition throughout, though again with wear to the gilding on the rims and outer back. The catch, hinge and catch button are all godd and the case snaps shut correctly.
Complete with crank winding key.
REFERENCE : This watch is listed in “Thomas Tompion 300 Years” by Jeremy Evans, Jonathan Carter & Ben Wright. This excellent book includes lists of movement serial numbers for Tompion. This reference notes that the watch has a later white enamel dial, and later gilt pair cases.
