Gilt & underpainted horn pair cases, 48mm
Verge escapement
Sold
A small verge watch, in an underpainted horn pair case.
MOVEMENT : A gilt verge movement, with an engraved and pierced balance cock, decorated with scrolls and foliage. Four round baluster pillars, and a silver regulator disk.
Running well, and in good condition.
Signed M. Josephs, London, and numbered 1810.
DIAL : A white enamel dial, in reasonable condition.
No repairs, but a few surface scratches and slight damage around the edge at 6 and 12.
Blued steel hands.
INNER CASE : Gilt brass, with no maker’s mark.
In good condition though with wear to the gilding on the outer surfaces. The hinge has one knuckle missing (of seven) but holds the movement firmly and the bezel snaps shut correctly.
The high dome bull’s eye crystal is fine.
OUTER CASE : A gilt brass pair case with underpainted horn covering. Again no marker’s mark.
The bezel and back are both decorated with a seaweed pattern. Beautifully painted, with a lot of detail and butterfly with gold highlights.
The hinge and catch are complete and the case snaps shut. The catch button is very worn though functional.
The horn is complete, with good colour, but cracks on the back, from the edge at 12, 2, 4, 8 and 10. Just one crack on the bezel at 10. There are about 18 pins missing from the pique work on the back and 10 missing from the bezel.
