Rack lever escapement
Price £775
An early 19th century Liverpool watch with a rack lever escapement, in very good condition though with replaced dial.
MOVEMENT : Gilt rack lever movement, with nicely engraved balance cock, diamond endstone, blued screws, and four round pillars. Protected by a removable gilt dustcap.
Signed Rt. Roskell, LIVERPOOL and numbered 9581.
In good condition throughout, and running well.
DIAL : Cream enamel dial, with subsidiary seconds.
In very good condition, with no damage.
Gold hands with blued steel seconds hand.
This watch is a rare example with a 15 second rotation of the second hand. This indicates that the dial is not original. The correct dial had a 15 second scale.
INNER CASE : Silver, with Chester hallmarks for 1827 (could be 1805), maker’s mark R.N (rubbed).
In very good condition. The hinge is fine and the bezel shuts correctly.
The high dome bull’s eye crystal is good except for one short scratch at 7.
OUTER CASE : Silver pair case with matching hallmarks to the inner (clear, not rubbed).
In very good condition. The bezel snaps shut correctly.
Robert Roskell is listed in Liverpool and London between 1798 and 1830.
The case maker is Richard Neale of Coventry
