Verge escapement

Price £1250

An early London verge, with a fine movement.

MOVEMENT : This gilded movement has four Egyptian pillars, a large silver regulator disk, and a nicely engraved and pierced balance cock with a mask to the neck. There is wonderful detail to the decoration, including beasts to the balance cock table and foot, and with the regulator disk pointer formed as a serpent.

The movement is signed J. Nevill, LONDON and numbered 300.

All in good condition, and running well.

DIAL : A signed silver champleve dial. In good condition, though a little bright and overcleaned.

Good early blued steel beetle and poker hands, both in good condition.

CASE : Gilt copper case, with a winding aperture to the back (missing the shutter). No maker’s mark.

All in good condition though the gilding has mostly worn off. There are rows of small holes around the bezel and edge of the back, where pins would have been used to fix a leather, shell or shagreen covering. This covering is now absent.

The high dome crystal is good, with just some tiny nibbles around the edge.
The catch, catch button and hinge are fine and the bezel snaps shut nicely.

The case is very slightly wide for the movement, the winder aperture has been widened, and the silver dial would normally be found in a silver case, so it is possible that this case is not original to the movement.
