London, c1790
Gilt pair cases, 66 mm
Verge escapement

Sold

A London centre seconds verge, in very large and heavy gilt brass pair cases.

MOVEMENT : A large gilt fusee movement, with verge escapement, engraved and pierced balance cock, four round pillars, blues screws and Tompion type regulator.

A steel lever under the dial at 4 allows the movement to be stopped and restarted.

Signed Thos. Foss, Strand, London and numbered 1161.

Running well with the stop lever working correctly.

The movement is protected by a removable gilt dustcap.

DIAL : A fine signed white centre seconds enamel dial.

In reasonable condition, with a few light scratches, a flake on the edge at 6 and some very light hairlines running across the bottom half.

Gilt hands.

INNER CASE : Gilt metal with maker’s mark RN.

In good condition, though with overall wear to the gilding on the outer surfaces and some dents around the inner rim. The bow is probably a replacement. The bezel snaps shut correctly.

The high dome crystal has a few light scratches but no chips.

OUTER CASE : A gilt metal outer case, with no maker’s mark.

It is in good condition, though the gilding has almost totally worn off on the outer surfaces. The hinge and catch are good, and the case snaps shut correctly. The silver coloured catch button is probably a replacement
