Gilt & enamel pair cases, 58.5 mm
Verge escapement

Sold

An Austrian verge escapement with calendar, fitted into wonderful English pair cases of about the same period. The English case would have originally held an English clockwatch movement.

MOVEMENT : A gilt fusee movement, with verge escapement, engraved and pierced balance bridge.

Signed Led? Lechner A Wien

All in good condition and running, though quite fast (gaining about 3 minutes per hour). The calendar work is complete and functions correctly.
The movement is slightly too small for the case, but is held firmly enough.

DIAL : White enamel calendar dial, in very good condition, with no repairs and just a few very light scratches. The dial feet are a bit worn but the dial is held firmly.

Blued steel Breguet style hands.

INNER CASE : Gilt metal, heavily pierced and engraved, with no maker’s mark but serial number 19163. This was probably the serial number of the original movement., The case has two winding apertures (as for a clockwatch) and a central screw in the back which would have secured a bell.

In good condition, though with some wear to the gilding on the stem, bow and edge of the back. The bezel snaps shut correctly.

The very high dome crystal is good.

OUTER CASE : A gilt metal outer case, gem set to the bezel and with finely painted enamel to the back. Again heavily pierced and engraved. The enamel plaque is set within a red guilloche enamel border.

The case is in very good condition. Just one pearl and one red crystal missing from the bezel, small area of white enamel highlights missing from the back and a few light scratches to the portrait.

This is a wonderful English pair case and although the Continental movement fits reasonably well, the case deserves a good quality English movement and dial from the late 18thc.

There is a Marcus Lechner listed in Vienna in 1781. This is about the right date for the movement, so this may be from the same family.
