Sold
A fine quality early 19thc. London verge, in silver and horn triple cases.
MOVEMENT : Gilt fusee movement, with verge escapement, finely engraved and pierced balance cock, four very unusual ornate pillars and silver regulator disk.
Signed Higgs Y Evans, LONDRES and numbered 28031.
Running well and in very good condition.
The movement would have been protected by a removable dustcap, but this is now absent.
DIAL : A signed white enamel dial, in very good condition, with just some light scratches.
Good steel beetle and poker hands.
INNER CASE : Silver, with hallmarks for London, 1813, maker’s mark IR and movement serial number 28031.
All in good condition though with one small dent on the edge of the back at 6 and some wear to the ornamental silver on the top of the stem. The bezel snaps shut correctly.
The high dome crystal has a few scratches but no chips.
MIDDLE CASE : A silver pair case, with hallmarks and maker’s mark matching the inner.
The silver is in very good condition. The hinge and catch are fine and the case snaps shut. The catch button has worn down but is still functional.
OUTER CASE : Silver with underpainted horn covering, and pique work to the back.
The silver is in excellent condition and the hinge, catch and catch button are fine. The bezel snaps shut.
The horn covering, underpainted to appear like tortoiseshell, is complete on both the back, and bezel. The silver pins of the pique work are nearly all present with just two missing from the back.
The case is complete with original red velvet lining and beautifully hand written (Spanish?) watch paper, dated 1813. Presumably this is original to the watch, as the dates correspond.
Higgs and Evans are listed at the Royal Exchange, London from 1775 until 1832. This firm of Robert & Peter Higgs and James Evans made watches for the Spanish market, usually signed HIGGS Y EVANS.
