Stock No. 2157
William Martin
Bristol c1700
Silver pair cases, 55 mm
Verge escapement, mock pendulum balance.
Sold
An early verge in silver pair cases, with a mock pendulum movement.
MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with a large winged balance cock engraved with foliage, with the aperture exposing the mock pendulum.
Four fine tulip pillars.
Signed Wm Martin, Bristol
In good condition, though with an old repair to one pillar (just under the plate) and a couple of teeth missing from the blued steel regulator wheel (see last photo). The steel catch, through the dial at 6, has a thumb piece which has worn, making it necessary to use a pin to help release the movement from the case.
Running well.
DIAL : An unsigned silver champleve dial. In reasonable condition, though with some rubbing to the central disk, and some scratches from the centre down to 5 and 6.
Good early blued steel beetle and poker hands.
INNER CASE : A silver case, with worn maker’s mark CW?.
In good condition throughout. The high dome bull’s eye crystal is good, with just one small chip on the edge almost hidden by the bezel. The bezel closes correctly.
OUTER CASE : A silver pair case, with no maker’s mark.
In good condition. The hinge, catch button and catch are fine and the case closes correctly.
William Martin is listed in Bristol between 1689 and 1739.
