An early provincial verge.
MOVEMENT : A gilded movement with four square pillars and a large silver regulator disk. The pierced and engraved winged balance cock is engraved with foliage and scrolls with a mask to the neck.
The movement is signed Jno. Wainwright, WELLINGBOROUGH, and numbered 840.
All in very good condition and running well.
DIAL : An unsigned silver champleve dial, in very good condition.
The unusual central disk is nicely engraved.
Blued steel hands. The minute hand is later and the hour has some damage towards the end.
INNER CASE : A silver case, with no hallmarks (too early) but maker’s mark EE and movement serial number 840.
All in good condition though the stem has been reattached and strengthened from the inside. The bow is a little distorted.
The high dome bull’s eye crystal is good. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut nicely.
OUTER CASE : A silver case with no silver or maker’s marks.
In reasonable condition although there are signs on the inside of old repairs around the edge of the back. The catch and hinge are fine and the bezel snaps shut nicely. There is some wear to the catch button
John Wainwright is listed in Wellingborough (Northants) from about 1709 until about 1751.
