An early verge in silver pair cases, with a beautifully engraved fine mock pendulum movement.

MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with a large engraved and pierced winged balance cock, the aperture exposing the mock pendulum. The balance cock and plate are profusely engraved, and include a large portrait of a Roman Emperor on the balance cock table. Four very fine crested tulip pillars.

Signed SPICHT, GRONINGEN

In very good condition and running well.

DIAL : Silver champleve dial, with signed central disk and calendar aperture below. Copper coloured rosettes marking the half hours.

All in good condition, other than one dial foot which is worn but the dial plate is securely held by the other two.

Fancy gilt hands.

INNER CASE : A deep silver case, with maker’s mark IF.

In very good condition throughout. The bow and stem are fine.
The high dome crystal is also good and the bezel closes correctly by snapping shut.

OUTER CASE : A heavy silver pair case, with no maker’s mark. Engraved to the bezel with a geometric pattern and to the back with an outdoor scene framed by a wreath and border.

In very good condition throughout. The hinge, catch button and catch are fine and the case closes correctly.

This watch may be by Philip van der Spigt, who was a watchmaker in Amsterdam, but moved to Groningen around 1709.
