Verge escapement, clockwatch movement, repeater

Sold

A substantial, early19th century silver verge watch, striking on the hour and half hour, and with hourly repeat on demand.

MOVEMENT : A large gilt movement with verge escapement and pierced and engraved balance bridge. Two mainsprings, both wound through the dial, for movement and strike.

The watch movement is in good condition, and is running well.

The strike movement is working correctly. The hours (one strike for each hour) and half hours (single strike) are struck by a polished steel hammer on a single gong.

On the side of the dial at 2 (under the bezel) is a lever to disable the strike.

A button on the top of the stem allows the previous hours to be repeated. A slide on the band at 2 allows the repeat to be disabled.

DIAL : White enamel dial.

In quite good condition, with just some minor scratches (the worst between 7 and 8), and a chip on the edge between 9 and 10.

Blued steel Breguet type hands.

CASE : The silver case has engine turned engraving to the bezel, band and back.
The maker’s mark FIC and serial numbers 4713 and 156703 are stamped on the inside of the cover, with a French silver mark (used from 1819).

Gilt sprung cuvette.

The case is in good condition, with just some even wear to the engine turning. The high dome crystal is fine. All hinges are fine and the bezel, back cover and cuvette all close correctly.
