A rare quarter repeating watch, in fine silver pair cases.
MOVEMENT : Gilt movement with verge escapement. The balance cock is finely pierced and has a diamond endstone. Good undamaged blued steel screws
Signed Jas. Evill, Bath and numbered 102.
All in very good condition and running well.
The repeating mechanism correctly strikes the hours and quarters, with two steel hammers on the bell which is screwed to the inside of the inner case. Nice clear strong chimes.
DIAL : White enamel dial and gilt hands.
In very good condition, except for a small chip on the edge at 10.
INNER CASE : Silver, pierced and engraved around the band.
In good condition. The high dome bull’s eye crystal and the hinge are good and the bezel snaps shut.
OUTER CASE : Silver case, with London hallmarks for 1781 and case maker’s mark IW. Pierced and engraved to bezel and band, with a nicely engraved vase and foliage to the centre of the back.
Again in very good condition throughout. The hinge, catch button and catch are fine and the bezel snaps shut.
James Evill (sometimes Evel) was in partnership in Bath with his father William during the late 18thcentury. This partnership was dissolved in 1790.
