A large and early London verge, in good overall condition.
MOVEMENT : A gilded movement with three Egyptian and one baluster pillar, and large silver regulator disk. The pierced and engraved winged balance cock is particularly finely engraved with foliage, a bird, and mask to the centre.
The movement is signed Jams. Boyce, London.
All in good condition, and running well.
DIAL : A signed silver champleve dial, in very good condition.
The central disk is signed as the movement.
Very fine early blued steel beetle and poker hands.
INNER CASE : A deep silver case, with no hallmarks (too early), but maker’s mark CW under a crown (rubbed).
All in good condition, though the stem has been reattached.
The high dome bull’s eye crystal is good. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut.
OUTER CASE :Matching maker’s mark to the inner, and nicely engraved on the back with a tree and the initials WS.
In good condition, with just a few light bruises and pin holes to the back caused by heavy stamping of the maker’s mark (CW) at the centre.
The catch, catch button and large square hinge are fine and the bezel snaps shut nicely. The catch spring, and possible the button, are replacements.
James Boyce was apprenticed in London in 1685, and was free of the Clockmakers’ Company in 1692.
The case maker is probably Cuthbert Weaver of London.
