Silver & underpainted horn pair cases, 56 mm
Verge escapement

Sold

A verge watch, in silver and beautifully underpainted horn pair cases.

MOVEMENT : A gilt verge movement, with an engraved and pierced balance cock, with scrolls and a mask to the neck. Four round pillars and silver regulator disk.

Running well, and in good condition, with just some light scratches around the pillar tops.

Signed Barthw Valentine, London and numbered 682.

DIAL : A white enamel dial, in good condition with just some very small surface marks.

Very nice gold matching arrowhead hands.

INNER CASE : Silver with hallmarks for London, 1801 and maker’s mark TC.

In excellent condition. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly. The high dome crystal is fine.

OUTER CASE : A wonderful silver rimmed brass pair case with underpainted horn covering.
The bezel and border of the back are both decorated with a seaweed pattern. This border frames a spectacular scene showing Britannia standing above a seated lion, with a ship in the background. The scene is beautifully painted, with a lot of detail and gold highlights.

The hinge, catch and catch button (slightly dented) are complete and the case snaps shut.

The horn is in excellent condition, with fine bright colours.

On the back there is one short crack, from the edge at 2 to the mast of the ship. There are no pins missing from the pique work.

On the bezel, there are 5 short cracks across the bezel, and again no pins missing.

Bartholomew Valentine is listed in London between 1787 and 1800.

The case maker is Thomas Carpenter of Islington Road, London.
