A good mid 18th century small verge watch, in a gilt case, by an important London maker.

MOVEMENT : A fine quality gilded movement, with a verge escapement, and a particularly finely engraved and pierced balance cock.  This shows entwined foliage and a mask to the neck. Blued steel screws, four square baluster pillars and a silver regulator disk.

Signed G. Lindsay, Sert. to his Majesty and numbered 596.

The movement is in good condition and is running (though a little fast, gaining 3 minutes per hour).

DIAL : The white enamel dial is in quite good condition, with no repairs, but a U shaped crack between 10 and the centre, and a chip at the opening catch at 6.

Fine gold beetle and poker hands in good condition.

CASE : Gilt, with no maker’s mark Engraved to the bezel and back, and with a large rotating round shutter to the winding aperture on the back.

The case is in good condition. The hinge, catch and catch button are fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly. The high dome crystal is good.

The gilding is evenly worn through, showing the rose gold coloured base metal underneath.

George Lindsay is known to have been working since 1743, and was appointed watchmaker to his majesty George III in 1760. He worked at the Dial, facing Fountain Tavern, near. St. Catherine St., Strand. Lindsay died in 1776.
