An exquisite and excellent quality gold verge pocket watch, with matching gold chatelaine. Finely decorated with rose gold repousse work overlaying moss agates.

MOVEMENT : A fine quality gilded movement with verge escapement. The large balance bridge is finely pierced and engraved. Four square pillars and large silver regulator disk.

Signed Le Roy, A Paris and numbered 2090.

The watch is running well.

Under the silver regulator is a further signature :
C. F. Graupner, Dresden,
who presumably was an early owner (see photo).

DIAL : White enamel dial.

In reasonable condition, though with some small edge chips (filled), hairlines around the edge, and a longer hairline across the centre from 4 to 10.

Nice 18th century gold hands.

CASE : This is a wonderful and very unusual multi coloured gold case with gold repousse work over a polished moss agate base. The pierced gold bezel and borders of the back are decorated with flowers and scrolls. The centre of the back shows two figures under drapery hangings.

The gold is rose coloured to the rims, hinge and bow, and yellow gold to the central portion of the bezel and the back. The gold catch button is set with a matching agate.

All in excellent condition. The gold is perfect with no damage or signs of wear. The agate is complete though there is one crack which can be see running behind the two central figures on the back The high dome crystal is fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly.

There are tiny maker’s marks ET on both sides of the hinge and another on the bow.

CHATELAINE : The matching chatelaine is again decorated with yellow gold repousse work over a moss agate base. The back is of gilt base metal to which the agates and gold panels are attached.

The decoration shows a central pastoral scene with a lady (playing a musical instrument) and her dog, with sheep at the base. There are gold hooks to both sides, suspending a matching key and bloodstone seal, also of gold overlaying agates.

The maker’s mark ET again appears on each of the three suspension rings.

All in excellent condition.

This watch is probably by Julien Le Roy (1686 to 1759) , a very important Paris watch and clockmaker who was descended from four generations of clockmakers.
