A mid 19th century Scottish verge watch, in good overall condition.
MOVEMENT : Gilt fusee movement, with verge escapement. The engraved and pierced balance cock is particularly nicely decorated with ornate radiating spokes. There are four rounds pillars and a Tompion regulator with silver disk.
Signed W. Gerrard, TURRIFF and numbered 8273.
Running well and in good condition.
DIAL : The white enamel dial is in good condition, though there is a repair at the centre.
Gilt hands.
INNER CASE : Silver, with hallmarks for London, 1861, maker’s mark JJ and case serial number 38976.
The silver is in excellent condition throughout. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly. The high dome bull’s eye crystal has a few light scratches and a narrow chip right on the edge between 4 and 5 (almost hidden by the bezel).
OUTER CASE : A silver pair case, with hallmarks matching the inner.
The silver is again in very good condition. The hinge and catch are fine and the case snaps shut.
The watch is accompanied by a watchmaker’s paper from R. Thomson of Aberdeen, and a key from A. McKenzie of Turriff.
William Gerrard is recorded in Turriff from 1812. He died in 1872.
