A good quality verge watch, in gilt pair cases, with regulator style dial and stop work.

MOVEMENT : A fine quality gilt fusee movement, with verge escapement, engraved and pierced balance cock, blued screws, four round baluster pillars, and transitional Bosley type regulator.

A steel lever under the dial at 7 allows the movement to be stopped and restarted.

Signed Richd. Johnson, Ripon and numbered 203.

Running well and in good condition, though with some scratches to the top plate near the pillar top.

DIAL : A fine enamel dial, with overlapping hours and seconds dials.
In excellent condition, with just some very fine surface scratches.

Gold coloured hands.

INNER CASE : Gilt, with worn maker’s marks.

In good condition, but with wear to the gilding on the stem and bow, and a little around the band. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly. The crystal is also good. The bow and stem are original.

OUTER CASE : A gilt pair case, with no visible maker’s marks.

In good condition., although the gilding has largely worn away. The hinge and catch are fine and the case snaps shut correctly. The catch button is worn and has been filled.

Richard Johnson was born in Knaresborough (Yorkshire) in 1759 and worked in Ripon when free of the Clockmakers’ Company in 1793. He died in 1844.
