Late 18thc. London gold pair verge watch

An 18thc. London pocket watch, in fine engraved gold pair cases, with verge escapement and later enamel dial.

MOVEMENT : Gilded verge escapement, with finely engraved and pierced balance cock showing a mask at the neck. Very large diamond endstone. Four round pillars, large silver regulator disk and blued screws.

Signed Rivers & Son, Cornhill, London and numbered 10101.

The movement is in good condition, and is running well.

DIAL : White enamel dial. A later replacement, probably early 19thc.

In reasonable condition, though with a few scratches and a chip across the bottom edge at 6.

Good matching 18th century gold arrowhead hands.

INNER CASE : 22ct gold, with London hallmarks for 1786 (maker’s mark rubbed).
In good condition with just the usual slight compression around the band.

The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut nicely. The high dome crystal is good.

OUTER CASE : Gold, with matching hallmarks to the inner (maker’s mark again rubbed). Engraved to the bezel and back, with a monogram in the centre of the back.

In good condition. The catch and hinge are fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly. The catch button is partially worn.

The gold cases have a combined weight of about 58 gms. (excluding crystal).

David Rivers and Son (also David) are listed at Cornhill, London from 1782 until 1815. They were successors to Daniel de St. Leu, Watchmaker to her Majesty (Queen Charlotte).
