Large late 18thc. cylinder watch with calendar

A large, late 18th century, London cylinder escapement watch, by a very good maker, in silver pair cases, with calendar dial.

MOVEMENT : Gilt fusee movement, with cylinder escapement, engraved and pierced balance cock with diamond endstone, four round baluster pillars and silver regulator disk.

Signed Thos. Wagstaffe, London and numbered 9853..
The movement is protected by a removable gilt dustcap, signed and numbered as the movement.

There are some scratches around the pillar tops but otherwise all in very good condition and running well, The calendar hand is correctly moving forward every 24 hours.

DIAL : A very fine, signed original white enamel calendar dial, in almost perfect condition, with surface scratches and a few very small chips around the edge, the largest at 3.

Black steel serpentine minute and hour hands, and gold arrow calendar hand.

INNER CASE : Silver, with hallmarks for London, 1784, maker’s mark TG?.

In very good condition throughout. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly. The high dome crystal has a few tiny chips around the edge but these are hidden by the bezel.

OUTER CASE : A slightly later silver pair case, with hallmarks for London, 1790, maker IT.

In good condition. The hinge and catch are complete and the case snaps shut correctly. However the catch button is worn down a little.

The outer case is a replacement, and although slightly too big for the inner, still holds it securely, closes correctly, and the appearance is fine.

Thomas Wagstaffe (1724 to 1803) was a prominent Quaker watch and clock maker who worked between 1756 and 1793 at Gracechurch Street, London. He was a Fellow of the Merchant Taylors Company.
