Early 19thc. London verge in underpainted horn case
Stock No. 1858
Gilt & underpainted horn & silver triple cases, 65mm
A London verge watch, in a charming underpainted horn outer, and silver inner cases.
MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with unusually engraved bell shaped balance cock showing an anchor at the centre of the table. Diamond endstone. Four round pillars and silver regulator disk.
Running well, and in fine condition, though there would have originally been a stop lever under the dial at 4 to allow the movement to be stopped and restarted, This is now missing.
Signed R.Stroud, London and numbered 3746.
The movement is protected by a removable gilt dustcap.
DIAL : A fine white enamel signed dial, with subsidiary seconds. In almost perfect condition with just a couple of light scratches near the seconds dial. Matching gilt hands and blued steel seconds.
INNER CASE : Silver, hallmarked for London 1813 with marker’s mark WD (rubbed).
In reasonable condition though with some light bruising to the back and a little compression around the band. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly. The high dome bull’s eye crystal is good with just light scratches.
MIDDLE CASE : Silver, also hallmarked for London 1813 (on the bezel).
The inside of the back has been strengthened by a white metal sheet, though no holes showing through to the back. Just some light bruises. The hinge, catch button and catch are fine and the case snaps shut correctly.
OUTER CASE : A beautiful silver and brass outer case with an underpainted horn covering. The bezel and back are both decorated with rims showing flowers and leaves. The back show a charming landscape with a lake, mountains and buildings. Beautifully painted, with gold highlights.
The hinge, catch button and catch are complete and the case snaps shut.
The horn on the back is in exceptional, almost perfect condition, with fine colours, even retaining the gold framing the picture. However the bezel is missing just over half of the horn covering.
Robert Stroud is listed in London from before 1775 until 1822.
