Verge escapement

Sold

A silver pair cased verge, with motto dial.

MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with engraved and pierced balance cock. Four round pillars. Unsigned but numbered (30331).

In good condition, with a few scratches to the plate around the pillar tops, and running well.

DIAL : Interesting enamel and gilt “Keep me clean” dial. Matching brass hands.

This is in good condition, except for 2 hairlines across the chapter ring, near 5 and 6. The outer gilt rim is engraved with :

KEEP ME CLEAN AND USE ME WELL.
AND I TO YOU THE TRUTH WILL TELL.

The dial, pr possibly only the dial false plate, is a replacement, as there are additional holes in the dial plate to accommodate this. However the dial and false plate are a perfect fit to the case.

INNER CASE : Silver, hallmarked for London, 1871, maker’s mark PW, and case number 7880.

The case snaps shut nicely and the silver is in excellent condition. The high dome bull’s eye crystal has some small chips on the edge but these are only visible from the inside.

OUTER CASE : Silver case, with matching hallmarks to the inner. The hinge, catch and catch button are fine and the case shuts correctly. The silver again is in excellent condition.
