Silver pair cases, 57.5 mm
Verge mock pendulum, calendar movement

Price £2500

Early English silver pair cased watch, with a particularly attractive mock pendulum movement.

MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with beautifully engraved and pierced winged silver plated balance cock. Semi circular cutout to reveal steel mock pendulum. Four crested tulip pillars.

Signed John Brand, Hurst.

In good condition throughout except for a missing section of the balance cock foot (right hand corner). Running. The silver plating to the balance cock is evenly worn, but retains a pleasing colour.

The calendar function works correcting, moving the calender ring forward every 24 hours.

DIAL : Silver champleve dial, with central disk signed Brand, and date window beneath.

There is a little wear to the edges, but otherwise in good condition throughout.

Nice early gilt beetle and poker hands.

INNER CASE : Silver, with no maker’s mark.

The bow (and probably stem) are later replacements and the stem has been reattached There is the usual slight compression to the side of the case, and a few very small bruises, but generally it is in good condition. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly.

The high dome crystal is ok, except for some small chips to the edge which are almost entirely hidden by the bezel.

OUTER CASE : Silver, again with no maker’s mark. Nice square hinge.

The hinge and catch are fine and the case snaps closed. The catch button has some small dents and there is some wear around the button, but otherwise fine.

The most likely origin for this watch is Hurst, near Reading in Berkshire.
