A good English cylinder in a heavy silver hunter case

Stock No. 1678

Francis Redmond
English, 1824
Silver hunter, 53 mm.
Cylinder escapement

Price £750

An excellent quality watch, with a cylinder escapement, in a fine silver full hunter case.

MOVEMENT : Signed (Fras. Redmond) and dated (1824). Cylinder escapement, with a heavy polished steel balance wheel and diamond endstone to the balance cock. Jewelling to the escape and 3rd wheels. Blued screws and four round pillars.

The movement is protected by a removable gilt dustcap.

A lever at the edge of the dial at 4 o’clock allows the movement to be stopped and restarted.

In very good condition throughout and running well.

DIAL : White enamel dial with subsidiary seconds.

In almost perfect condition, with just some tiny marks. Gold coloured hands and blued steel seconds hand.

CASE : A heavy silver, full hunter, case. Hallmarks for London, 1822/3, maker HJ. Milled band, engraving to both covers, and a ribbed stem and bow. The front is engraved with a monogram (FR) and date (1824), and the back with a family crest and motto (OMNIA VINCIT AMOR).

In good condition, with just some small bruises to the covers and a little wear to the bow. The hinges are all fine, and both covers and the bezel snap shut correctly. The crystal is fine. The front cover is sprung and flips open when the button on the stem is depressed.

The monogram and date engraved on the case match those on the movement, so Francis Redmond was certainly the owner, rather than the maker, who had this watch personalised by the maker in 1824. The family crest is probably that of a Redmond family.

The case maker is probably Henry Jackson of Clerkenwell, London.
