Cylinder movement

Sold

A fine quality late 18th century London cylinder movement, in gold pair cases.

MOVEMENT : Gilt cylinder movement, with beautifully engraved and pierced balance cock. Large diamond endstone, four round baluster pillars, small silver regulator disk and blued screws. Signed (Jno. Jardin, London) and numbered (1798).

The movement is protected by a removable gilt dustcap, signed and numbered as the movement.

This movement is in exceptional condition, and is running well.

DIAL : White enamel dial in good condition, with some surface scratches (eg. the IX numeral) and just a small area of damage and a hairline right on the edge at 4. Gilt hands.

INNER CASE : 18ct gold, with London hallmarks for 1799, maker’s mark IW.

In very good, though with an old repair to the top of the stem where the gold is a slightly different colour. The bow and stem appear to be original and test as gold. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut nicely. The high dome crystal is also fine.

OUTER CASE : 18ct. gold pair case with clear matching hallmarks to the inner. Nice hidden hinge.

In good condition with a scratch on the back at 4. Possibly an old repair on the back at 11 where the gold is a slightly different colour.

The catch and hinge are fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly. The catch button is absent.

John Jardin is listed in London between 1777 and 1804, and at Throgmorton Street, City of London in 1799.

The case maker is John Wright of Red Lion Street, Holborn, London.
