A fine quality duplex escapement, in a good heavy gilt case, by Barwise of London

MOVEMENT : Gilt duplex movement, with engraved balance cock, diamond endstone, polished gilt escape wheel, four round pillars, and blued screws. The Bosely regulator is fitted to the balance cock, with the adjustment and scale shown on the top.

Signed (Barwise, LONDON) and numbered (4379).

This movement is in good condition, and is running well. The lever on the dial at 4, stops and restarts the movement, by a pin mounted on the top plate.

DIAL : White enamel dial, with subsidiary seconds, numbered as the movement.

Very good condition, except for one light hairline running from the edge at 3 towards 5.

Gilt hands, with blued steel second hand.

INNER CASE : Substantial gilt case, with maker’s mark AGJM, and stamped with the movement serial number.

A few light scratches but generally in excellent condition throughout. The hinges are fine and the bezel and back cover both snap shut correctly. The high dome crystal is fine.

The case maker’s mark is for Anne Grove and James Melvill, who are recorded at Vineyard Walk, Clerkenwell in 1813.

John Barwise is recorded working in London from 1790. He was Chairman of the British Watch Company and died in 1842.
