Gold repousse pair cases, 50 mm
Verge, quarter repeating movement

Sold

An early and excellent quality gold verge repeater, in beautiful repousse pair cases.

MOVEMENT : Gilded movement with baluster pillars, silver regulator disk, large diamond endstone, and beautifully pierced and engraved balance cock. Protected by a removable silver dust cap.

The movement is signed (Jno.Bayley, London).

All in good condition. Running well and repeating correctly.

DIAL : A later white enamel dial, in very good condition, with just one light hairline on the edge at 7. Probably late 18th century.

Fine 18th century, gold, beetle and poker hands.

INNER CASE : 22ct, gold case, with rubbed maker’s mark but clear London year mark for 1736.

Beautifully engraved and pierced, with scrolls and foliage around the band and a mask at 6.
The case is in good condition with just a few light bruises. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut nicely. The stem and bow are fine, and original, with a little wear to the sleeve of the stem. The high dome crystal has a few light scratches but is otherwise ok.
The steel bell is attached to this inner case.
The small lever on the bezel at 7 is a ‘pulse piece’ allowing the repeat to be silent but vibrating, by pressing the button during the repeat. This lever is intact, working and can be accessed from the bezel of the outer case.

OUTER CASE : Quite a substantial unmarked 22ct. gold, engraved and pierced case, with beautiful repousse work showing classical figures at a feast.

The catch, catch button and hinge are all fine and the bezel snaps shut nicely.
The repousse work is in good condition, with virtually no wear to the high points.

The gold cases, excluding movement, crystal and bell, weigh about 56 gms.

There is a John Bayley, in London, listed from 1720.
