An mid 18th century London verge pocket watch, in wonderful gold repousse pair cases, and a shagreen exhibition third case. Both watch and gold cases in unusually fine condition.

MOVEMENT : Gilded movement with four square pillars, silver regulator disk, and beautifully pierced and engraved balance cock. Clean blued screws.

The movement is signed (Jno. Grantham, London) and numbered (3905)

All in very fine, almost mint condition. Running well.

DIAL : A fine white enamel dial. In perfect condition.

Nice mid 18th century, blued steel, beetle and poker hands.

INNER CASE : 22ct gold case, with London hallmarks for London 1761, maker IW.

Fine original stem and bow.

Again in very fine condition, with just the usual slight compression to the band, The high dome, bull’s eye crystal is perfect and the bezel snaps shut correctly.

MIDDLE CASE : A substantial 22ct gold case, with beautiful repousse work, possibly showing a biblical scene. Very high relief repousse work.

The catch, catch button and hinge are fine and the bezel snaps shut.
The repousse work is in wonderful condition, with no wear to the high points. It appears to be unsigned.

THIRD CASE : A gilt and shagreen protective outer case, with glazed exhibition back.

There is wear to the gilding, and to the shagreen covering, but the hinge, catch and catch button are fine and the bezel snaps shut. There are a couple of small chips on the edge of the glass.

This case is a perfect fit to the repousse case, and is almost certainly original to the watch. Being kept in this outer protective case explains the excellent condition of the inner cases.

John Grantham is recorded in London in 1762.
