An early 19th century pair cased verge, with a very unusual dial, featuring two subsidiary dials showing the date and the owner’s name in place of hours.

MOVEMENT : Signed (Jn. Paxton, St. Neots) and numbered (69).
Gilt brass verge movement, with four square pillars, engraved and pierced balance cock and engraved plate.

The movement is in excellent condition and is running well, with the calendar functioning correctly.

DIAL : A white enamel dial, with the owner’s name (THOMAS USHER) replacing the numbers on the hours subsidiary, and a calendar subsidiary to the right.

In good condition, with no repairs, and just a light hairline across the calendar and small flakes to the centre of the calendar.

INNER CASE : Silver, with London hallmarks for 1820, maker SP. Also stamped with a fish motif.

In excellent condition throughout. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut.
The bull’s eye, high dome, crystal is perfect.

OUTER CASE : Silver with matching hallmarks to the inner.

In very good condition. The catch, catch button and hinge are all fine and the case snaps shut securely. Just a couple of very small scratches on the back.

John Paxton is listed at St. Neots from 1784 until his death in 1832.

The case maker is Samuel Pike (hence the fish stamp) of Bunhill Row, London.
