Gold pair cased cylinder by John Ellicott

This is a fine 22 carat gold watch, with beautiful pair cases, and a fine quality cylinder movement, by a great maker. All original and in exceptional condition.

MOVEMENT : High quality gilded fusee cylinder movement, with engraved and pierced balance cock and plate. Large diamond endstone. Signed and numbered (6752). The gilt brass dustcap has matching signature and serial number. Fine original condition and running well.

DIAL : Excellent white enamel dial, in perfect condition. Fine 18th century gold beetle and poker hands (perfect and probably original).

INNER CASE : 22 carat gold, hallmarked for London, 1772, maker’s mark PG under a fish stamp. Also marked with the same serial number as the movement.

Fine condition, with a good high dome bull’s eye crystal.

OUTER CASE : 22 carat gold, engraved to back and bezel, with matching gold marks to the inner.

Again in fine condition.

Excluding both the movement and crystal, the cases weigh 64 gms.

John Ellicott, born in 1706, was partnered with his son, Edward from 1760. He died in 1772. From 1758 all John Ellicott watches were simply signed Ellicott.

The case maker is Peter Goujon (goujon is the French for the gudgeon – hence the fish stamp) who is recorded at The Star, Theobald’s Row, London in 1763.
