Pair cased verge with polychrome name dial

A fine silver pair cased verge with polychrome name dial, with an interesting and original watchpaper.

MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with engraved and pierced balance cock. Four round pillars, blued screws and large silver regulator disk. Elaborately signed (Jno. Edgecombe, Bristol).

Working, and in very good condition.

DIAL : Wonderful polychrome enamel dial, showing a pastoral scene. Beautifully painted, with shepherdess, sheep and sheepdog in the foreground with a lake and house in the background.

The chapter ring spells out the owners name “ROB JEFFERIS” instead of numbers, with a sun motif at 12.

The dial is in exceptional condition, with no repairs or overpainting, and just some light scratches (the worst just to the right of the tree).

Blued steel hands.

INNER CASE : Silver, with London hallmarks for 1810, maker’s mark TG.

In good condition throughout. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut.
The high dome bull’s eye crystal is also fine.

OUTER CASE : A large silver pair case, with hallmarks matching the inner. Nicely decorated throughout with bright cut engraving.

Again in very good condition. The catch button, catch and hinge are fine and the case snaps shut.

John Edgecombe is listed in Bristol. He was married in 1784 and free of the Clockmakers’ Company from 1812..

The early watchpaper is from the clockmaker Aquila Barber, who was also working in Bristol, from 1781. It is signed by the original owner on the back “Mr. Robt. Jefferis, April 7. 1813”
