Gold & enamel verge, with naval associations

A fine London gold and enamel verge, with a wonderful quality enamel plaque. Interesting naval associations.

MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with engraved and pierced balance cock featuring an exotic bird and foliage. Silver regulator disk, four round pillars and blued steel screws.

Signed “Thos. Lozano, London” and numbered (221).

In excellent condition and running well.

DIAL : Very unusual white enamel dial with gold numbers and central star.
In excellent condition with only a few tiny marks around the edge.

Later gilt hands.

INNER CASE : A 22 carat gold case, with rubbed hallmarks for London, 1747, maker DA.
A few scratches around the band but otherwise in very good condition.

The construction of this inner case is very unusual, with no bezel and the crystal within the middle pair cases, rather than this inner case. The hinge is fine and the movement snaps into the case perfectly. The bow ands stem are fine.

PAIR CASE : A wonderful gold and enamel pair case, with green enamel decoration to the bezel and rim, and a wonderful enamel plaque to the back. This shows the popular naval image of “The Sailor’s Farewell”.

The catch button consists of a turquoise stone in a silver surround. Within the case is a watchpaper, celebrating the launch of HMS Anson in 1747.

The case is in very good condition, with just some losses to the green enamel in places. The catch spring is still in place but the end piece is missing so the bezel does not snap shut (though is held closed firmly by the outer case). The high dome crystal is fine.

The wonderful enamel plaque is in almost perfect condition, with just a few tiny scratches, mostly on the edge at the base.

OUTER CASE : This is a gilt exhibition case, glazed to the rear.
In excellent condition throughout.

Thomas Lozano is listed in London from the early 18th century until about 1760.

The case maker is probably Daniel Aveline, of Seven Dials, London. HMS Anson was a 60 gun ship, launched in 1747, the same year that this watch was made.
