Quarter repeat verge by Finch, London

A good quality London verge repeater, in gilt pair cases.

MOVEMENT : Gilded movement with baluster pillars, silver regulator disk, and beautifully pierced and engraved balance cock with diamond endstone.
The movement is signed (Richd. Finch, London) and numbered (684).

All in good condition. Running well and repeating correctly, though occasionally the strikes are a bit dull when the hammers don’t strike cleanly.

The movement is protected by a removable gilt brass dustcap, signed and numbered as the movement.

DIAL : White enamel dial, in good condition. Just one scratch between 11 and 12, and a couple of tiny chips on the edge at 4 and 6.

Wonderful gold serpent hands.

INNER CASE : Beautifully pierced and engraved silver gilt, with gilt brass stem and bow. Internal steel bell.
There is some wear to the gilding, but otherwise all in very good condition. The high dome crystal is in good condition.

The small lever on the bezel at 7 is a ‘pulse piece’ allowing the repeat to be silent but vibrating, by pressing the button during the repeat.

OUTER CASE : Engraved and pierced gilt brass, with maker’s marl TG under a goose.

All in good condition, although like the inner case there is some wear to trhe gilding. The catch, catch button and hinge are fine and the bezel snaps shut nicely.

Richard Finch is listed in Lombard Street, London after 1725 and in the Clockmakers’ Company between 1733 and 1762.

The case maker’s mark is for Thomas Gosling (hence the goose). He is recorded at Lilypot Lane, Aldersgate, London, in 1777.in 1777.
