Cylinder escapement

Sold

This is an early London cylinder escapement watch in good condition, in fine gold and shell pair cases

MOVEMENT : Gilded cylinder escapement, with finely engraved and pierced balance cock, with diamond endstone. Four round pillars and blued screws.
Signed (John Hunt, London) and numbered (1781).

The movement is protected by a removable gilt dustcap, which is engraved with the maker’s initials (JH).

The movement is in good original condition and is running well.

DIAL : The white enamel dial is probably a little later than the movement. In very good condition, except for a repaired chip on the edge at 6.

Fine gold? hands.

INNER CASE : 22ct gold, hallmarked for London, 1761, maker’s mark indistinct.

In reasonable condition, with some compression around the band and a few bruises. The stem and bow are fine and appear to be original. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut nicely. The high dome bull’s eye crystal is also in good condition.

OUTER CASE : Gilt brass & tortoiseshell pair case.

The shell covering is in good condition, except for a section missing from the bezel at the catch. A few pins missing, but generally in very good unrestored condition.
The hinge, catch and catch button are all fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly.
